Aging and Loving it!
Well, I might have a different outlook on it than most people. Being a cancer survivor at age 39 with two
children under 6 years old, my whole goal in life became the big desire to age. Times were tough
adjusting to my “new normal plumbing” which included a permanent colostomy along with some other
physical adjustments I talk about in my first book, If the Battle is Over, Why Am I Still in Uniform? I even
discuss my sex life…did that entice you?
Would I make it to 50?
I had to fit several life threatening surgeries in the first few years and I wondered if I’d be able to live
until I was 50. I wanted to see my children grow up and get married and told the doctor (who I
affectionately called the “rear admiral” and never to his face) he would have to do his best along with
my friends, the Bible study ladies, praying their way through my healing. I heard my doctor was a great
surgeon, but prayers would always help.
By the way, my son got married last year, sigh…tears of gratitude!
What? Almost 60? Life’s getting better!
Well I survived the fifties and am on the brink of 60 years old and qualify for most senior citizen
discounts these days. I am feeling younger these last seven years than I did the previous 30. The loss of
150 pounds helped a lot too. I can walk a lot faster these days… I just have to wait a minute for my skin to catch up!
Your Glasses Are On Top of Your Head…
stemmed from one of the projects I did for the Association of Applied and Therapeutic
Humor three year program I participated in to earn my CHP,Certified Humor Professional.
It is filled with my own humorous, inspiring stories about aging along with many
contributing writers across the USA.
“Speaking” of Aging…
These days I’ve been asked to speak more frequently at Aging and Healthcare conferences
because we all need the good benefits that come from laughter.
I enjoyed my time with the great people of Staples, MN and the surrounding areas
at their Aging Celebration conference. They even had me ride in tooting my horn on an electric scooter!
It was also red nose day so I passed out a ton of those and we had a lot of fun!
Let’s not get too bogged down on worrying about aging.
This is the goal, to age well, laugh often and love much!
